Reflection

This sculpture series, created during the height of the pandemic, represents a deep philosophical reflection on those troubling and uncertain times when humanity found itself in a state of global fear and insecurity. "When we cry to the sky, it reflects on our faces" embodies the core concept of this work, which explores the idea of response and interaction between the human being and the surrounding world. The faces of the sculptures, depicted with distorted expressions, visualize the human cry directed to the heavens, searching for comfort, protection, or perhaps an explanation.

The figures, showcasing faces filled with fear and despair, simultaneously convey an honest and profoundly human impulse for understanding and healing. These works refer to the notion that our requests and prayers directed toward external forces inevitably reflect within us. The sky, as a conceptual reflection, becomes a metaphor for the response to our pleas, symbolizing the attempt to find truth in the chaos of the world.

Flesh and Clay. Earth and Sky.

An important emphasis is placed on the fact that the sculptures are painted in colors closely resembling the natural hues of clay, which highlights the earthly nature of human existence. These forms aim to remind us of the physical essence of humanity, its inherent connection to nature, and its "fleshly" reality, despite the striving for abstract, idealized heights. Thus, through this contrasting combination of the celestial and the earthly, I sought to express a philosophical view of the nature of human existence, where our most intimate cries and requests echo in the human experience and the surrounding world.

When we cry out to the sky, it reflects back onto our faces... Yet, we are made of flesh. Earth and clay are our origin…

Technique and Art: Sculpting and High-Temperature Firing

The creation of this sculpture takes, on average, one and a half months and requires careful attention at every stage. The process begins with modeling from high-quality clay, which has good plasticity, allowing for precise and expressive forms. All sculptures are made with a hollow interior, which significantly complicates the work as it requires careful handling and even drying to prevent cracking.

After completing the modeling, the form must dry at a controlled temperature to avoid distortions. This is a lengthy process because drying is done gradually, without sharp temperature changes, to prevent so-called "thermal shock." The next stage is the first firing in a kiln at a temperature of 1250°C. This process, called biscuit firing, is necessary to strengthen the structure and remove moisture from the material.

After the first firing, when the clay becomes sufficiently strong, I begin applying glazes, carefully selecting them based on their chemical compatibility with the base material. I use both classic and custom glazes, experimenting with texture and color to achieve a unique visual effect. The glaze is applied by hand, allowing me to achieve the desired hue and depth of color.

The final stage is the second firing at the same temperature of 1250°C. This firing fixes the glaze and completes the process. The final work requires attention to every detail to ensure perfect harmony between the glaze and form, as well as to create textures that reflect the intended image. The technological process requires great patience and a high level of skill to achieve the desired result.
